What to Pack for an Uluru Retreat

The Central Desert asks us to prepare for contrast.

Warm sun can be followed by a very cold evening. A quiet morning walk may begin before first light. The air can be dry, the distances are real and the simplest items often become the most valuable.

You need less than you may imagine.

And what you bring needs to work well.

Clothing for changing temperatures

Bring light, comfortable clothing for walking during the day. Also pack layers:

• a warm jumper or fleece

• a jacket for cold mornings and evenings

• long trousers

• a beanie for winter journeys

• a light rain layer

• comfortable clothing for rest and shared meals

Even when the forecast looks warm, desert temperatures can change quickly.

Walking and sun protection

Bring:

• supportive, worn-in walking shoes

• a broad-brimmed hat

• sunglasses

• sunscreen

• a small daypack

• a reusable water bottle

• any walking poles or supports you normally use

New shoes are best tested well before the journey.

Personal essentials

Remember:

• prescribed medication

• basic personal first aid

• insect repellent

• lip balm and moisturiser

• a head torch

• toiletries

• travel insurance information

• any mobility or health supports you require

Tell your guide about significant health, dietary or mobility needs before the itinerary is finalised.

Something for listening

A notebook can be useful.

So can a sketchbook, a favourite pen or a small object that helps you become quiet.

And there is no obligation to record everything.

Sometimes the most powerful way to meet a place is to leave your phone in your bag and allow your senses to receive it directly.

Leave some space

Do not pack every available corner.

Leave physical space for what you may need along the way, and inner space for what the journey may bring.

Deep Listening to Nature provides participants with a specific packing list before each retreat or private journey.
